SUPPORT YOUTH’S SUMMER ORGANIZING

Dear STOP supporters,

After five years of hard-fought struggle, STOP, along with the Obama CBA Coalition and allies, have won a major victory: an agreement with the Mayor on the CBA housing ordinance. This is one of the most significant and aggressive affordable housing policies won in Chicago’s recent memory. This ordinance could stop the displacement of thousands of low-income and working-class Black residents who live near the future Obama Presidential Center. Of course, the fight is not over -- we still have work to be done on jobs and economic development -- but today we celebrate a major victory.

While we celebrate we are also gearing up for our next major fight: the youth-led campaign to get police out of schools and re-invest those funds into social workers, counselors, and restorative justice alternatives. This summer we are training our next generation of youth leaders to lead this fight through our six-week socially-distant summer organizing program.

Last month, thanks to our organizing with the #CopsOutCPS Coalition, Chicago’s school board came only one vote short of canceling their $33 million contract with Chicago police. They will vote again on August 26. We are organizing a series of actions leading up to August 26 to win the vote and build the campaign for police free schools.

We need your financial support to make our police-free-schools summer organizing a success:

  • $650 stipends a youth to participate in the summer program

  • $300 stipends a vetran STOP youth to facilitate a summer program workshop

  • $100 supports phone banking software so youth can make hundreds of phone calls to community members for support

  • $60 is your membership at STOP for a year

  • $25 buys art supplies to make protest posters and banners

No gift is too small (or large :). Our goal is $5000 in these next four weeks, by August 14. Please give at stopchicago.org/donate or by mailing a check to 602 E 61st St, Chicago, IL 60637. Thank you.

In solidarity,

The STOP family
